| The client brief for
this garden was to provide a slightly larger entertaining area near the cherry
tree. Also required was the provision of some privacy between the two existing
lawns from the views of road by the low stonewall. It was important that any
changes provided for the garden makeover would give the impression that it had
always been there. They required that the area be manageable and therefore of
low maintenance. To increase the space for the entertaining area, an existing
large shrub behind the shed was removed as well as the small circular planting
beds in the flag stone area. By removing this shrub I was able to extend the
flag area by moving the shed further back, create a new small lawn area and
opened up the space to enable views of the rest of the garden to be seen. All
of the existing York stone flags including the ones found buried under the
large shrub required levelling and relaying. Textured natural Indian flags were
chosen to increase the flag area and to blend in with the natural texture of
the York stone flags. These new flags would soon weather in and blend in with
the colour of the existing York stone flags. The evergreen shrub, Griselinia littoralis was planted between the two lawns as an informal hedge to provide privacy from the road when sitting on the garden bench. Therefore the height of the hedge is not to exceed more than a height of 1.5meters. Its glossy light green leaves will provide colour all year round. A rose arbour was provided between the Griselinia hedge to add height in this boarder and to allow access between the two lawns. In the boarder opposite the Griselinia hedge, the existing small variegated shrub and Lavender shrub was kept and York stones were provided to complement the hard landscaping and to create an alpine garden space. |
